Accelerated Reader

At Ribbon Academy, reading is at the heart of everything we do. We want every child to develop a lifelong love of reading while building the skills needed to become successful, confident readers.

From Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 2, children access books that are carefully matched to their reading ability through Accelerated Reader, a programme that helps pupils practise reading independently, monitor their progress and celebrate their success. Accelerated Reader encourages children to read regularly, develop comprehension skills and take ownership of their reading journey.

Each morning at 8:45am, children take part in our Book Club session. This dedicated reading time allows pupils to enjoy books independently, whether they are reading an Accelerated Reader text or a decodable reading book. We also encourage all children to read frequently at home, as regular reading is one of the most effective ways to improve fluency, comprehension and vocabulary.

Children begin by completing a reading assessment, which helps teachers identify an appropriate reading range for each pupil. They can then choose books within their range, promoting both challenge and enjoyment.

Once a book has been finished, children complete an Accelerated Reader Quiz either in school or at home. These quizzes assess understanding of the text and help teachers monitor reading progress. Children may use their book when completing a quiz, allowing them to revisit key information and develop effective retrieval skills.

Accelerated Reader supports pupils to:

• Increase reading stamina and fluency.
• Broaden vocabulary and knowledge.
• Take responsibility for their own reading progress.
• Develop positive reading habits and a love of books.

Children can monitor their reading achievements throughout the year and are encouraged to challenge themselves to read widely and regularly. We celebrate progress, effort and achievement, helping pupils to develop pride in their reading and recognise the value of becoming lifelong readers.
