Sports Teams

As a ‘Platinum’ School Games Mark, we value the role of physical activity and education to further develop our children, and provide enriching experiences. We liaise closely with Easington School Sports Partnership (ESSP), CNS All Stars and Seaham Primary Schools Football League to participate in as many events as possible.

Please see below our most recent events.

Year 2 Hockey

Our Year 2 Hockey Team competed in a local schools competition. The boys played as tight team and communicated well throughout. After a tough round of games, they secured 3rd place which is a phenomenal achievement!

Year 3/4 Sportshall Athletics

Our Year 3/4 athletics squad travelled to East Durham College to take part in a Sports Hall athletics competition.

In a field of 16 teams (from local schools), our boys and girls performed incredibly well demonstrating tremendous teamwork and determination.

The team came away with a few individual wins which secured silver medals. Another tremendous achievement for our school!

Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics Champions

The Year 5/6 Athletics Team travelled to East Durham College to take part in a Sportshall athletics competition.

Here is Mr Lowerson’s report:

In 2023, we won this competition so the team entered as defending champions – the children were determined to retain their title!

Throughout the event, the children performed extremely well demonstrating skill and determination. As a result of their effort, the team came away with many individual ‘personal bests’ which contributed towards an incredible team total – a magnificent 704 points!

Our children deserve much credit for their dedication to their training and for their competition performance. We are all incredibly proud of their achievement. This victory also qualifies the team for the County final – hopefully they can match last year’s achievement!

Year 5/6 Girls’ Football

A group of talented girls travelled to East Durham College to take part in a football competition. Due to the high interest and lots of enthusiasm we were able to field two teams.

Here is Mr Lowerson’s competition report:

One of our teams were in a group with five other teams and finished in 4th position having managed a couple of draws and some narrow defeats.

The other other team won their group meaning they qualified for the semi final however, they were defeated at that stage meaning they qualified for the bronze medal match. In that match, the girls secured the win (4-1) meaning they took home bronze medals.

I am incredibly proud of both teams. Their effort was outstanding in every game.

Seeing so many girls (across 17 schools) wanting to play football demonstrates how big the game is becoming!

Year 5/6 Tag Rugby

Our Year 5/6 tag rugby teams travelled to Peterlee and Horden Rugby Club to take part in a local school competition.

Here is Mr Lowerson’s report:

Ribbon’s two teams were a part of a twelve team field and the standard was incredibly high.

One of our teams won three group games to book a place in the semi final, whilst our other team were narrowly beaten by a single try in a couple of games and fell just short of qualification.

The team that advanced were beaten in the semi final which meant they moved into the bronze medal match…a match that they would lose through a last second try.

Both teams demonstrated great determination and an improving skillset. They have trained hard in PE lessons and after-school clubs so they deserve credit.

Year 3/4 Tag Rugby Winners

Our Year 3 & 4 Tag Rugby teams travelled to Brandon Primary School to take part in the CNS ‘Sport Stars Tag Rugby Competition’.

Here is Mr Lowerson’s competition report:

Ribbon were competing against four other schools from Brandon, Tanfield Lea, Burnopfield and Houghton (each school entered two teams).

The Ribbon teams were split into different groups. The Year 4 team were successful in all four of their games finishing top of the group with a place in the cup final.

The Year 3 team had a tougher run as they competed against older children however, their hard work secured a place in the last group game (level on points with Tanfield with two wins and a draw each from their opening three games). With the game level at 1-1 and only seconds to go, the team produced a moment of magic to score the winning try meaning that Year 3 were the winners of their side of the group!

Instead of playing the final between our Year 3 and 4 teams, it was decided that Ribbon would be crowned joint winners in the competition! Everyone who played deserves huge credit not only for their quality of play but for their attitude and respect towards other teams.

Football – A Team – Harry Page Cup

Ribbon’s A Team took part in the ‘Harry Page Cup’.

Here is the Managers’ report:

Ribbon hosted another x4 schools in a mini group with the winner advancing to the final at a later date.

We began the group with x2 0-0 draws before finally registering our first win (1-0) in our 3rd game. Heading into the last game, we knew a win would see us top the group and advance to the next stage of the competition. However in the last game, we were on the wrong end of a 1-0 score line which put our opponents into the final at our expense. Well done to our opponents and to Ribbon A Team for battling hard throughout – just falling short at the end.

Ribbon B Team were in a group with x2 other teams and, again, the standard was really good. We were on the losing side in a tight opening game before a 0-0 draw in the second. We then played the first team again and another tight score line saw us beaten 2-1.

Both teams showed great resilience against tough opposition and never gave up.

These results follow league games earlier in the week where the A Team were beaten 5-2 and our B Team were victorious 3-0.

The football season will resume after the winter break.

Year 5/6 Netball

Our Year 5/6 netball team competed in local schools competition organised by Easington SSP.

The team played very well and secured a place in the final. As a result of finishing in second place, the squad will progress to the County final where they will compete to become the best in Durham.

Good luck to this very talented squad!

Cross Country Final

Our Year 6 Team travelled to East Durham College to take part in the County Durham Sports Cross Country County Final.

Here is Mr Lowerson’s report:

The girls qualified as one of the top x2 teams in Easington District and our boy secured 3rd place in the regional event.

The entire team performed incredibly well against a really strong field of the best long distance runners in County Durham (many of them club runners).

Special mention to one of our Year 6 girls who won the Year 5/6 girls’ race and is now the Cross Country County Champion. What a tremendous achievement! 🥇

We could not be prouder of this squad!

Football – A and B Teams – League

Our A & B Teams both played in their latest league matches against Ropery Walk.

Here is Mr Lowerson’s match reports:

Ribbon Academy A Team v Ropery Walk Primary B Team

The A Team began really quickly, racing into a 3-0 lead in the first half but, a great free kick pulled a goal back to take Ribbon into the break 3 – 1 up. Ropery Walk started the second half the quickest team and were rewarded with a second goal. Credit to Ribbon though who regrouped and rallied together to score another 2 goals to end the game 5 – 2👏 .

Ribbon B Team Academy v Ropery Walk Primary B Team

The B Team were in an equally tight battle with Ropery Walk fielding some really strong players. After a close opening few minutes, Ribbon got the opening goal before adding a further two in quick succession to see us 3 – 0 up at half time. The second half was much tighter but another moment of brilliance saw us get a fourth goal and that’s how it ended 4 – 0👏 .

Credit to both teams who are demonstrating great teamwork and are improving with every game – well done! Champion. What a tremendous achievement! 🥇

We could not be prouder of this squad!

Cross Country

Today, our cross country teams visited East Durham College to take part in a competition with other local schools.

Here is Mr Lowerson’s event report:

Every one of our teams performed extremely well this morning.

Here are the results:

Year 1/2 Boys – 2nd Place 🥈

Year 1/2 Girls – 2nd Place 🥈

Year 3/4 Boys – 3rd Place 🥉

Year 3/4 Girls – 3rd Place 🥉

Year 5/6 Boys – 3rd Place 🥉

Year 5/6 Girls – 2nd Place 🥈

Individually, Ribbon had overall winner in the Year 1/2 boys’ event and in the Year 5/6 girls’ event as well as a 3rd place finish in the Year 5/6 boys’ event. 🥇🥇🥉

As a result, we are delighted that our Year 5/6 girls’ team and our 3rd-placed boy from the Year 5/6 event have all secured a place at the county final in 3 weeks!

A HUGE ‘well done’ to our children and special thanks to Easington SSP for another outstanding event.

Football – A & B Teams – Daniel O’Hare Cup

Ribbon’s A & B teams have started their respective football seasons in the Seaham Primary Schools League.

Ribbon’s A Team have already played their opening two fixtures. The first game was a hard fought 2-0 victory against a strong Seaview Primary team before winning the ‘Murton Derby’ 4-0 against St Joseph’s Primary!

Ribbon’s B Team played their first game against Seaview Primary last week and secured victory (2-1)in a very tight game. There was some great football played by both teams but, our players showed tremendous character to clinch victory in the last couple of minutes!

In addition, the A team also reached the final of the ‘Daniel O’Hare Cup’ and were narrowly beaten (1-0) against an outstanding team from Seaham Trinity Primary. On another day, it could have gone the other way and we were so proud of their efforts!

Our attention now turns to our next fixtures with both sides at home to Ropery Walk Primary on Friday.

Many thanks to Mr Frankish and Mr Lowerson for supporting both teams.

Disney Shooting Stars

A small group of Year 2 & 3 girls travelled to East Durham College to take part in a Disney shooting stars festival.

Here is Mr Lowerson’s event report:

The festival involved a carousel of different football activities ranging from passing, shooting and other technical aspects of the game.

The girls were outstanding and represented our school very well. Their skill level was so impressive – potential Lionesses 🦁of the future!

It was great to see so many girls taking an interest in football and the Disney tunes were a bonus!.
